Any automobile is defined and represented by its aerodynamic, speed, and, most importantly, engine performance. Several factors contribute to the smooth running of an ideal engine to work without any disturbances and stalling.

Properties such as power, turbulence, and exhaustion, less noise, heating and cooling system, sound ignition system are what describe the quality of an ideal engine. So to give a top-notch performance, the making, and maintenance of a locomotive engine matter a lot; this is where cylinder liners come in a frame.

Processes such as the manufacturing, casting, and lubrication of cylinder liners are essential to determine the engine’s performance. In this article, we will talk about the importance of lubrication for cylinder liners.

What are cylinder liners or cylinder sleeves?

Cylinder liners or cylinder sleeves are a type of liner used in automobile engines and other marine vessels. Its function is to protect friction that forms during the ignition caused by friction. Cylinder liners are often made up of materials like alloys of chromium, nickel, cast iron, etc., using centrifugal casting to obtain pure materials. The cylinder liners protect the engine, so they are made to provide high thermal resistance and resistance against high pressure.

Many companies have the expertise to manufacture these types of cylinder liners, and one such company is Fabauto Liners. They also provide customized products as well as cylinder liners.

    Lubrication Of Cylinder Liners

The cylinder liners are manufactured chiefly using centrifugal casting to obtain the purest material possible. For the smooth operation of engines, lubrication is the most crucial step.

Lubrication means applying a coat or film on a surface to avoid friction and stress between two surfaces, which can cause corrosion. Lubrication on engines significantly reduces temperature and provides clean machinery, free of sludge. For more information, check this out.

We know that a piston goes up and down within a cylinder. Various piston rings are put into the grooves on the piston to accomplish multiple jobs, including filling the force inside the discharge chamber so that it does not spread from below.

The rubbing speed between the piston rings and the cylinder liner is pretty fast. There are harsh conditions of temperature, pressure, and corrosive gasses inside the combustion section to which any lubricating liquid between the piston and the liner would be subjected.

It is not difficult to envision that lubricating oil used within a cylinder liner must tolerate high temperature and pressure conditions and have superior corrosion resistance. To give you an idea, typical lubricating oil used inside the liner should have a viscosity of 115-150 CST at temperatures of around fifty degrees celsius.

Special additives might be added to the oil to make it oily or stickier. Aside from that, the quantity of grease provided should be optimal. Although too little oil would cause the surfaces to break apart quickly, too much oil will interfere with regular combustion inside the chamber and cause damage to different elements such as valves, valve seats, etc.

    Why Use Lubrication?

    Here are some of the key reasons that make the lubrication process very important;

    1. It reduces friction in the engine
    2. Provide a debris-free area
    3. Neutralizes acid
    4. Seals the space between cylinder liner and piston rings during ignition

A typical lubricant has a composition of mineral oil in addition to alkaline compounds and sulfur. Acidity and sulfur content should also be kept in mind while choosing grease for the engines. Modern engines use automatically controlled lubrication methods with the use of computers.

Traditionally used systems involved methods such as the CLS method, which is based on time and Accumulator lubrication. In CLS and Accumulator lubrication, CLO drops are equally distributed throughout the cylinder liners, which are further pressed by the movement of piston rings.

Load Change Dependent or LCD is used when CLO injection’s capacity is increased to achieve a short period in lubrication which further protects the liners against corrosion and frictional wear.

Greater injection of oil drops increases durability and sustainability and works as a primer during the process such as ignition, start, stop, maneuvering, etc. Another method of lubrication called intermittent lubrication process frequency involves distributing CLO drops by a process controlled by algorithms, sensors, or well-adjusted frequency.

The Future Of Cylinder Liner Lubrication

The majority or most of the fuel or lubricants used are manufactured in a way that causes damage to the environment; hence greater efforts have been made regarding the fuel to be made and processed using eco-friendly methods. Biofuels such as ethanol and methanol are more likely to be preferred and used on a large scale shortly.

    Final Word

Cylinder liners play a major role in protecting the engine of the automobiles from wear and tear. However, they need to be lubricated at regular intervals to ensure that they work in a proper manner. Follow the steps as mentioned above to properly lubricate your cylinder liners and increase their longevity.
