Why Should a Fashion Illustrator Be Hired Before Designing

Drawing and painting have been born out of the human mind since a long time ago. Even condescendingly assuming the early man as primitive, it was used for purposes both material and ethereal. In our times, art has been applied to almost all aspects of our life. Adapted by the rich and the poor in a similar manner, the medium of art has grown to infinity. People have found more and more utility of the art and even modern and digital ways to draw objects.

Fashion Illustrator is one such position that justifies the use of art for material support in our society. This article aims to present the reasons as to why one should hire fashion illustrators.

Through the nature of their jobs and their skill set, this article will become the perfect guide to understand the benefits of an illustrator in designing.

What does a Fashion Illustrator do?

When someone is hired for this position, their job is to follow the designer’s perspective and translate their ideas into something closer to the real. Though it isn’t as limited as it sounds as the illustration skills offer a variety of opportunities. Sometimes fashion designers themselves illustrate their ideas instead of the traditional abstract boards. They also fill up blogs and magazines about fashion that feature illustrations in large quantities. This doesn’t necessarily have to be something made real, but the concept of a potential dress is also valuable. Famous fashion brands have books filled with illustrations, be it either a new fashion object or innovations in an existing style.

In broader terms, they also have the opportunities to work for coverings and other art. Their illustrations are useful for book covers as the publishers and writers want to hint at the creative world they have created. Similarly, for both fashion and makeup brands, illustrators can make attractive art for the promotion of products. Their skills in different styles and platforms are something extraordinary for the common executives.

What Special Knowledge Do They Have?

    • Life Art

It is no surprise to know that an illustrator may have highly stylised or excessive drawing skills. But the real skill in the fashion industry is to be able to draw objects resembling real life. This includes the creation of different poses and sizes for the model’s bodies, for which the dress might be designed for. They possess the skills to articulate a human body’s movement in art and drawing.

    • Fabric Folds

An illustrator for fashion knows the movement of fabric as well. A piece of fabric is very clearly made to adjust to the body movements of the person wearing it. When one illustrates the same dress in a different pose by the model, they understand the complexity of how a piece of fabric would fold in that pose. The knowledge of fabric folds is one of the most important aspects of the illustration business.

    • Texture Types

When it comes to illustrating, knowing texture types is just as important as knowing the fabric folds. These two are the different sides of the same coin as the fabric folds vary from one texture type to another. A thick wool dress does not fold up in the same way as a cotton shirt might do. Furthermore, the knowledge of texture types makes the look of the dress clear from the drawing itself for slight variations of fabrics.

    • Perspective View

This applies to things outside of fashion as well, but what an illustrator can bring to the table with a perspective view is worthwhile. Be it from a usual afternoon lunch or the sitting audience below the ramp; the illustrator can imagine the dress in its full glory.
