Some dogs have food allergies. The – but how do you discover what they are and what do you do about them? One of the best ways to determine food allergies in dogs is to follow an elimination diet, where you change your dog’s diet to a limited list of ingredients that do not contain known allergens. They can be home-cooked meals or commercial diets made specifically for dogs with food allergies.

To check if your dog has food allergies, you can try these three diets:

    1. Limited Ingredient Diet – Limit your dog’s diet to determine the specific allergens causing your dog’s reaction.

    2. New Ingredient Diet – Introduce ingredients one at a time that your dog has not come into contact with for some time (if he/she has been allergy-free during that time), so you’ll know if it is causing a reaction.

    3. Prescription diet: It’s a diet based on coarse ground foods or specific ingredient diets that contain hypoallergenic ingredients. The critical thing to remember is, only about 10% of dog allergies arise caused by food.

Also, it is essential to distinguish between dog food allergies and dog food intolerances.

Food allergy occurs when the dog’s immune system mistakenly recognizes certain food ingredients as harmful and then produces defensive antibodies to fight invading enemies.

Food intolerance is a digestive problem, not an immune response. Food intolerance occurs when the dog’s digestive system cannot digest certain ingredients. Therefore, choosing the most suitable dog food for allergies should be part of broader allergy awareness and testing protocol. Doing so ensures that you will not overlook any component of the dog allergy trial-and-error discovery process, which will help improve the overall health and well-being of your dog.

Most dogs (70%) of one to three years old start showing signs of allergy, but they may start showing signs as early as one month old. Most allergies that begin between six months to six years of age are related to food.

After allergic flea dermatitis (FAD), atopy is the second most common type of allergy in dogs. Atopy in dogs is characterized by generalized seasonal itching. “Prevention is better than cure”, so please follow a few methods which can save your pet from discomfort. And subscribe to top rated pet insurance to cover your pet friend’s illness and save some money you incur on regular vet visits.

A wide range of veterinary bills can be unexpected and are often expensive. Being reimbursed for much of the cost is the primary reason people buy pet insurance NZ. Review your pet insurance quote and policy carefully to understand what can be claimed, the amount you will receive, and the period. These may range from general veterinary visit expenses to treatment costs for accidents, injuries, and illnesses. Plus, you must know this, certain pet health insurance policies cover your pet’s dental complaints too. and perhaps even on to dental and more.

It covers dental care needed because of an accident, illness, or injury, but not cosmetic work. In case your dog needs a tooth extracted, a tooth cavity filled, or suffers from gum diseases, etc. You may resort to a dog insurance plan that covers your pet’s oral diseases as well.

If recommended by your vet, alternative treatments such as homeopathy, acupuncture, and physiotherapy may be covered by your pet’s insurance. Spaying or neutering your pet reduces insurance premiums. Monitor your dog’s health and choose what suits him the best.

Long-term and ongoing conditions are only covered if you have a lifetime policy – by that, we mean you started your policy before your pet’s condition emerged and you’ve kept paying your premium since. Check your pet health insurance policy to understand your coverage in this area, such as pre-existing, hereditary and congenital conditions. Read the policy terms and conditions carefully before signing up for one to avoid disappointments later.

As mentioned above, many if not most pet owners these days have their pets desexed. As you can see the variables are extensive. Do your research carefully and you can find a wonderful plan that gives you the coverage you need for a great price, dog allergy or not.
